Holidays in a camper, five ideas for a green trip

by admin

ROME – With the growth in the number of users who choose to spend their free time and holidays traveling with caravans and campers, advice for virtuous behaviors to keep aboard these vehicles and more is spreading. And precisely in terms of best practices, the Motorhome and Caravan Manufacturers Association (Apc) has launched the initiative called “Bring sustainability into a camper: 5 ideas for your green travels”. A series of simple tips to be more in symbiosis with the environment around us by implementing sustainable behaviors that benefit both nature and future generations. Below are the five tips suggested to the people of campers by the PCC.

At the table, like at home

We can devote a first attention to one of the main daily moments in the life of the camper: meals. All non-biodegradable “disposable” solutions are transformed into waste to be disposed of. But avoiding them is easy. We prepare our “camper service” with plates, cutlery, cups and glasses to wash and reuse. And we do the same with tablecloths and napkins. The set table will thus be more sustainable and also more welcoming. We will produce less waste and, at the same time, the camper will be even more our traveling home.

Solid cosmetics, nature for your hygiene

Another choice that can accompany us concerns daily hygiene. To limit the use of plastic, a convenient, effective and natural solution is solid cosmetics. Soaps, shower gels, shampoos and other bathroom products that are made with very little or no water. Their solidity has two great qualities: it ensures a long life and avoids the use of plastic containers destined to increase our waste production.

Even in the kitchen we can be sustainable. A choice that has the flavor of the past, but which saves energy and gas, is called a cooking box. This system refers to an old method and allows slow cooking of food thanks to the use of a box made with natural materials (wood, felt, wool). The operation is really simple: the dishes are heated on the stove and then placed in the box where they will continue cooking without the need for any energy supply. For this reason, it is ideal for long preparations such as legumes, soups and minestrone.

Lighter, more sustainable: choose what to take with you

The camper has always been appreciated for its ability to travel with everything you need. However, not always everything we carry is really useful. And, so, sometimes we find ourselves bringing home unworn clothes or things that have never been used. Also in this case you can make a choice of sustainability by getting used to traveling with what can really be used during the trip, depending on the destination. First of all, the quality of life in the camper will benefit from it, with more order, fewer management problems and more space available.

Small commitments for sustainable results

Like at home, even when traveling, sustainability depends first of all on behaviors and lifestyles. In many cases, it doesn’t take great sacrifices to make more environmentally friendly choices. Using water responsibly, for example, helps to reduce the waste of this precious asset, perhaps with the help of flow limiters to be installed on the taps. Another “virtuous behavior” is to drive at a constant speed and with the lightest camper possible, which saves fuel and, consequently, reduces emissions into the environment. Finally, APC recommends resorting to alternative systems for the production of electricity, exploiting the energy of the sun through the specific solar panels for campers. (mr)
