If washing your hair improves your life: the advice of the stylist and entrepreneur Anya Hindmarch

by admin

“A bad day / closed at home thinking / a wasted life / there is nothing to do / there is no way out / well, I almost get a shampoo”. They are words or, better, verses by Giorgio Gaber: the song The shampoo came out as a single in 1973. You can’t help thinking about Gaber when reading the book just released by Bloomsbury in the UK, If in doubt, wash your hair, which we could translate as When faced with a choice, wash your hair. The second part of the title is ambitious, A manual for life. The author is Anya Hindmarch, British designer and entrepreneur (pictured above, photographed in his London office) and it is difficult for him to have chosen the title thinking of Gaber. He explains in the preface: “Wash your hair is the answer I give to anyone who asks me for advice.” It’s a way to get a smile. It was the English who coined the expression bad hair day, one day ruined by “bad” hair. Gaber, who had beautiful hair and kept it long, would also smile.

The “middle age” manual

In the book Anya Hindmarch of advice, practical and not only, gives many and much more detailed than “wash your hair”. Because hers is a story of success but also of unexpected events and setbacks: once she has passed the age of 50, she writes, she has decided to tell the various roles that life has destined for her. Or that she chose herself. Woman, mother, stepmother (how bad the Italian word sounds, stepmother), because hers is an extended family, a worker and then an entrepreneur: “I tried not to give up on any of these fronts and I think I can give some advice, with sincerity and, I hope, in polite way – he says – In many ways I feel like I did when I was 18 and I always remember my father’s words: at 70 he told me he did not feel different from the teenager he had been, except when he was playing squash or he was looking in the mirror ».

The importance of instinct

Anya Hindmarch adds, in addition to the physical change, that she feels different from having learned to care less about less important things, to trust her judgment and to accept what happens. Simplistic phrases? Maybe. Or essential, to which the story of lived experiences gives substance, in particular as an entrepreneur. In 2007 he launched a canvas bag to raise awareness of reducing the use of shopper not recyclable, with the inscription I am not a plastic bag. In 2020, after two years of studies, the scholarship was born I am a plastic bag, made with recycled bottles . The next challenge? Difficult to say, because, writes Anya, «creativity eats my strategies for breakfast».
