On this occasion, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Holy See Council for Culture, will present the Vatican’s “Per Artem ad Deum” (Per Artem ad Deum) Art Medal, this year’s winner of the Italian film director Giuseppe Tornatore). Director Tonadore won the 1990 Academy Award for Nuovo Cinema Paradiso.
The announcement states that director Tonadore won the award for “presenting the real situation, the deep experience of the relationship with the infinite and unknowable God”. Director Tonadore “used complex metaphors and religious allegories to encourage the masses to step into the unknown”.
In his acceptance speech, director Tonadore stated that “the film itself has always been a tool, a way of telling experiences in a spiritual and humanistic spirit”. “Many of the most famous films in film history are considered carriers of spiritual messages, although they are often not made for this motive”. He emphasized that I believe that today’s cinema “is always connected to the meaning of human life on a different level.” Some film stories show this connection more bluntly, but in others it seems to be hidden.
