ROME – Summer full of campers with the growth of “en plein air” tourism which, after the success of last year, shows no signs of stopping. A trend confirmed by clear economic signals: in contrast with the automotive market, the first quarter of 2022 saw an increase of 9.6% in registrations of motorhomes compared to the same period of 2021 (data from the Caravan and Motorhome Manufacturers Association). A figure that confirms the extremely positive trend of the sector, which had closed 2021 with an 11.92% growth in sales of new recreational vehicles compared to 2020.

The confirmation of the positive trend of the sector then comes from a survey launched by the Salone del Camper in April among its visitors (almost one hundred thousand in 2021), in which it is highlighted that summer 2022 will be in Italy, by the sea, possibly for two weeks and with the bike in tow. 70.52% of the sample of interviewees declared that they will choose Italy for their holidays, 43.89% will stay at the campsite, while 38.58% will choose parking areas. 46.73% will leave as a couple and 43.38% in the family, spending a rather long period away from home ranging from two weeks (33.65%) and beyond (33.72%). The favorite destination is the sea, chosen by 56.53% of those interviewed, followed by the mountains (19.57%), while 15.44% will dedicate themselves to visiting the cities of art. In any case, the interviewees aim to transform the same itinerary that will lead them to the final destination in many small holidays.

According to the survey, the most popular sporting activity during the next holidays will be cycling for 43.80%, followed by trekking and hiking for 35.25% of the sample. The demand for recreational vehicles is constantly growing, especially towards agile, compact vehicles, which allow you to move around the city and dedicate yourself to your favorite activities in your free time and on vacation, in short, a hymn to the “van life” (42, 30% of registrations are for vans). “The van is part of a rapidly expanding market segment because it allows for the reconciliation of different needs – explains Gloria Oppici, project leader of Fiere di Parma which hosts the Salone del Camper – It drives easily like a car, you can park without difficulty and it has lower consumption compared to classic vehicles. Despite being small in size, it is perfectly equipped and therefore allows you to leave for both last-minute weekends and more demanding itineraries.
