We already knew, but the confirmation of the news is comforting: La Scala in Milan will inaugurate the next opera season on December 7 with Boris Godunov, a masterpiece by the Russian Musirgskij. A choice made for years that the superintendent Dominique Meyer defends as that of having Russian interpreters like Anna Netrebko. “I’m not for the witch hunt – he said at the presentation press conference – I’m not for the cancellation of Russian works and when I read Pushkin I don’t hide”. War is one thing, masterpieces are other.
“I am very happy for the first time with Boris Godunov, who is an absolute masterpiece – added the superintendent – I hope that for Sant’Ambrogio we will have peace, and you think how nice it is to open with a Russian opera”. This was said by the mayor of Milan, and president of the Scala Foundation, Beppe Sala, during the presentation of the 2022/23 season of the Teatro alla Scala.

Meyer also spoke of soaring costs: «We are worried about cost increases, it would be stupid not to worry. Here at the theater the electricity bill will go from two to four million. We are working on energy efficiency, we have projects and the NRR will give us a hand, we have not waited for the energy crisis to begin to move. With our project we will be able to reduce CO2 emissions by 52%. We cannot be happy with the trend in raw material costs, but we have started a cost reduction plan. In the last two years we have lost between 25 and 27 million due to the closures of the theater but we have managed to arrive with balanced budgets ».
