Lucio Dalla, an exhibition for a master of eclecticism

He didn’t seem predestined. He did not know enough music to compose, he had too short fingers to play the piano and many record failures behind him. Yet he has become one of the greatest and most original songwriters in the history of Italian music. On February 26, 1971, at the Sanremo Festival, Lucio Dalla sang “March 4, 1943”, the date of his birth and also, since then, one of the symbolic pieces of Italian music of that generation.

“March 4, 1943”

And to celebrate it, what better occasion than an exhibition (entitled “Lucio Dalla. Even if time passes”) hosted at the Museo Civico Archeologico in Bologna until July 17 (from September 22 it will move to the Ara Pacis in Rome and in 2023 , on the occasion of the eightieth birthday, in Naples and Milan). A unique opportunity to rediscover the traces of the human and professional path of one of the most loved Italian artists. The declared goal of the curator, Alessandro Nicosia, is to show everything Dalla. A kaleidoscope – the result of a long search for materials embellished with many testimonies from friends and colleagues – in which the many expressions that belonged to it found space. Including his deep spirituality.

Eclectic

The exhibition is divided into numerous sections (Family, Childhood, Friendships, Musical beginnings, Dalla “tells us”, the clarinet, the Dalla museum, Dalla and his music, Dalla and cinema, Dalla and the theater, Dalla and television, the Dalla, Dalla and Roversi Universe, Dalla and his Bologna), because “being eclectic” was the dress he wore best. And there is no shortage of “unpublished” parts of Lucio, the result of his experience in Bologna: clubs, restaurants, sport, lesser-known friends. in which there are dozens of photos of the Maestro with many characters from culture, music and entertainment. But, above all, with the many collaborators who accompanied him in his career, told in an encyclopedia with over 250 names of people with whom he had work and friendship relationships. According to Andrea Faccani, president of the Dalla Foundation and cousin of the singer, “Lucio knew how to do everything. He was even a great basketball player ”. Is it possible, a Dalla without defects? “We found the report card of the“ Galvani ”high school in Bologna – explains Nicosia to Rai 5 – where he has a“ one ”in mathematics and is rejected in the fourth grade. And his mother told him I understand that you are not made for school ”.
