ROME. The death of David Sassoli has struck and grieved the institutional world, both in Italy and in Europe. European Union flags at half mast at the buildings of the European institutions in Brussels as a sign of mourning. In the seat of the European Parliament in the Belgian capital, the blue-background flags with the 27 golden stars fly at half mast from 8.30 this morning. Shortly afterwards, the Commission and the EU Council also did the same in the buildings of the European headquarters.

Mario Draghi expresses his deepest condolences as follows: «He was a man of the institutions, a profound pro-European, a passionate journalist, Sassoli was a symbol of balance, humanity, generosity. These qualities have always been recognized by all his colleagues, from every political position and from every EU country, testifying to his extraordinary civic passion, ability to listen, constant commitment to the service of citizens. His untimely and sudden death leaves us dismayed. To his wife, Alessandra Vittorini, to his children, Livia and Giulio, and to all his loved ones, my personal and government condolences ».

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella remembers him in this way: «The unexpected and premature death of David Sassoli saddens me deeply. His death opens a void in the ranks of those who believed in and built a Europe of peace at the service of citizens and represents a source of profound pain for the Italian people and for the European people. His clear, constant, passionate commitment has contributed to making the Strasbourg assembly the protagonist of the political debate in a very delicate phase, giving voice to the expectations of European citizens ».

«Sassoli, with the other European leaders, was able to accompany – says Mattarella – a decisive turning point for the future of Europe: from civil and social rights, to dialogue with other countries, starting with the Mediterranean. Also with the commitment to the Conference on the future of the Union. Passionate politician, loyal and rigorous leader, he was able to nourish with his culture a political initiative at the service of people and institutions. A man of dialogue, he made the method of comparison the key to his relationship with his interlocutors, in search of the common good. Quality that he had also been able to express in his work as a journalist ». “The closeness and condolences of those who knew him and the feeling of gratitude of the Republic for his precious work, an expression of intense civil passion, are addressed to his family”, expresses the Head of State.
