Mazda thinks about the future where there is not only electric

ROME – There is an expectation to know the provisions in the “Fit for 55” package that the European Commission will present on July 14 to adapt the EU standards to the new emissions targets for 2030. The EU’s objective is ambitious and will involve specific commitments by the governments of all the Member States to obtain that increase in emissions reduction set at 55% in just under ten years. Meanwhile, Mazda Italy has organized a digital round table with the eloquent title: “The road to the mobility of the future. Biofuels and e-fuels: an opportunity in the transition to electrification ”.

The meeting was attended by Wojciech Halarewicz, new vice president of sales & customer services Mazda Europe; Roberto Pietrantonio, CEO of Mazda Italy; Davide Bonalumi, professor of energy systems, energy department of the Polytechnic of Milan and Giuseppe Ricci, general manager of Energy Evolution of Eni (president of Confindustria energia). From the meeting it emerged that the search for decarbonisation cannot only go through the electrification of the Italian fleet which, although constantly expanding, still consists of a too small number of purely electric vehicles.

A diffusion, it was emphasized, held back by the lack of infrastructures and the still too high costs of electric cars. It is no coincidence that the greatest increase in sales is being recorded in the sector of hybrid vehicles which benefit from electric support but which can still be supplied by the traditional (and ultra-widespread) distributor. Pending the stricter limits on CO2 emissions that will be imposed by the EU, a holistic, inclusive and multifunctional approach appears to be the most immediate practicable way by making use of what is already available today such as biofuels and e -fuel, sustainable alternative power supplies which, however, should be adequately encouraged. Also in this case, in fact, the excise taxes applied by the Government, identical to those applied to classic fossil fuels (as opposed to the taxation on energy to recharge electric vehicles), slow down the development of their production.

In short, the concept that emerged from the meeting, and widely shared, is that there is no single solution to the abatement of polluting emissions but that concrete decarbonisation can only be achieved by adopting a “multisolutions” methodology that allows the resources already available to be used integrating them with future ones. For its part, Mazda has already announced an acceleration of its global electrification strategy which by 2030 foresees a quarter of its products fully electric, while all the others will be electrified in some way.

Between 2022 and 2025, the house of the albatross, which last February was the first manufacturer to join the eFuel Alliance, will introduce a range of new vehicles using the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, with 5 hybrid models, 5 plug-in hybrids and 3 electric. Finally, Mazda is investing in various projects and partnerships to promote the development and use of renewable fuels and at home, for example, is involved in joint research and studies between industry, university and government on biofuels derived from the growth of microalgae.
