Migrants, Mattarella: “Italy and Europe called to do more”

by admin

“Europe and Africa are called to do more, in the sign of an open, effective, sincere collaboration, where the positions are sometimes distant, but always respectful and constructive”. This was stated by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, interviewed by the Algerian newspaper Libertè on the day of the start of the state visit to Algiers. “Unfortunately, Italy is well aware of the tragedy that the Mediterranean has been experiencing for some years now. Our country, with its culture of welcome and openness to the rest of the world and to the Mediterranean basin, has always been, and still is, strongly committed to safeguarding the lives of migrants at sea, endangered by the networks of organized crime that exploit the tragedies of individuals and families, including children. Europe and Africa are called to do more, in the sign of an open, effective, sincere collaboration, where positions are sometimes distant, but always respectful and constructive »says Mattarella.

For the Head of State «The migratory phenomenon must be governed for the good of all. If not, both our humanitarian reasons and our state systems will be overwhelmed. To do this, we must address the root causes of migration, in particular the instability and insecurity of some areas of Africa, which require political and sustainable solutions and economic and social development, an indispensable condition for guaranteeing opportunities for the new generations. An endogenous and integrated growth model, respectful of the environment and people, is the best response to uncontrolled migration phenomena. Today’s challenges offer an opportunity, perhaps unique in history, to work on a vision developed together ».
