Milan, a reference point in Europe for research on artificial intelligence. The Milanese universities Bocconi, Statale, Bicocca and Politecnico join forces to create a center of excellence for research and training in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The four universities have in fact become one of Ellis’ Units, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems. The initiative was presented at Palazzo Marino, seat of the Municipality, by the mayor Giuseppe Sala, by the rector of Bocconi, Gianmario Verona, by the vice-rector of the state, Maria Pia Abbracchio, by the rector of Bicocca, Giovanna Iannantuoni, and by the rector of the Polytechnic. , Ferruccio Resta.
Founded in 2018, Ellis is the association that brings together the best European scientists and academics of artificial intelligence with the aim of promoting scientific development on the subject in Europe, which will increasingly play its competitiveness in the future against the giants of sector, the United States and China. Milan is therefore a candidate to be a point of reference for these studies and to become in the future a kind of Cern of artificial intelligence, a real European-level institute. “Having the four universities together is a guarantee”, explained Sala, according to which “having the support of European funds is another guarantee and it seems to me a positive thing for our city and our country”.
There are four lines of research: interactive machine learning, which studies the interaction of an algorithm with the environment; neural networks and deep learning; health and computational biology, which applies AI to medicine; the use of AI for natural language analysis and processing. For the rector of the Polytechnic, Ferruccio Resta, «artificial intelligence is a tool that allows us to find value within data. A world opens up for security, energy, culture, city, mobility and environmental policies. It is a piece with which we present ourselves on the NRP and which we make available to the country and the city to make these great transformations more effective ».
