“No more children left in the car”, here are the “anti-abandonment” technological systems to avoid these tragedies

ROME – The law exists, it’s called “Salva bambini” and it was approved in 2021. From March of the following year, fines were also triggered for motorists who, with children under the age of 4 on board, did not equipped with “anti-abandonment” devices. These are the same penalties valid for failure to use seat belts or child restraint systems: from 81 to 326 euros and the loss of 5 driving license points. In case of recidivism within two years also the suspension of the license from 15 days to two months.

But how many actually install it? And how many tragedies could have been avoided? In fact, the various existing systems signal the abandonment of the child through visual, acoustic and haptic signals such as vibration, which attract (or should attract) the driver’s attention promptly inside and outside the vehicle. Let’s see how they work.

The Babybeep, created by the Bari-based company “Esperienza Made in Italy, is made up of a universal cushion, to be placed on the seat of any car seat, and can be combined with one or more smartphones via Bluetooth technology. When the child is placed on the seat, the device emits a BEEP and the notification “The child is on board” appears on the APP. If the driver leaves the car without taking the child with him, babybeep sends a notification to his phone via the servers of his Service Centre. If the driver does not respond to the notification within 2 minutes, the alarm is triggered by sending an SMS with the geographical coordinates of the smartphone to the contacts previously indicated by the user during the configuration phase.

Then there is Volvo which is putting its technology into play. The Swedish company has developed a new radar system with a sensitivity that can also detect movements on a sub-millimeter scale, such as those of a sleeping child, for example. To ensure maximum coverage, radars have been placed in the front, rear and even in the boot. The best time to signal the presence of people left inside the passenger compartment is when we get out and lock the car. In this case, the system automatically prevents locking of the doors. by launching a warning message on the center console screen. At the same time, the air conditioning system remains active, in order to improve the state of comfort and above all to reduce the risk of hypothermia or heat strokes.

It’s called TIM BabyPad, the anti-abandonment device with bluetooth, designed to detect the presence of a child in a child seat in the vehicle and created in partnership with Octo Telematics. The App connected to the TIM BabyPad detects the presence of the little one and, if the parent gets out of the car, the smartphone emits an alarm. If the alarm is not disabled, text messages are also sent to pre-associated numbers with GPS coordinates, preventing any dangerous situations.
