OZ Racing, 50 years of made in Italy successes

by admin

ROME – The history of the automobile is dotted with Italian excellence in every department of the industry and when it comes to alloy wheels for motorsport and world ofaftermarket, few companies can boast the same prestige, profits, longevity and commercial partners as OZ Racing based in San Martino di Lupari.

Founded in 1971 in the back of a service station by Silvano Oselladore and Pietro Zen (hence the initials OZ) the Venetian company has just celebrated its first fifty years of activity, crowning the record turnover achieved in 2020 in the best possible way: “A success sought from all points of view and the result of a strategy launched in 2002 which completely restructured the company giving it, among other skills, that of reacting very quickly to changes”. The words of Claudio Bernoni, president and managing director of the ppo Oz Spa crane, refer to an operation based on the Toyota model and defined in jargon lean (English for lean, lean, tight), which OZ Racing chose to adopt using external consultants to facilitate the transition: “Being synergistic to a radical change of pace, the new approach required enormous synchronous efforts, long-term collective cohesion and a profound revision of the work mentality in each department which, at times, was found to be incompatible with the habits of managers. The approach allows for a flatter organization chart by breaking down many pyramid levels. Thus the work on the ground increases for everyone – reveals the CEO – and for the system to work, the management must be fully involved in everyday life. I believe that if we had operated in the traditional way without developing adequate reaction skills through the method lean, certain economic results would have been unattainable ”.

The numbers of OZ Racing reflect the reflections of its historic president and the ambitions of a property that has always reinvested in innovation. Today the company employs 250 employees with three quarters of the workforce in Italy and since the beginning of the new millennium it occupies a position of absolute importance – if not completely dominant – in the panorama of global motorsport. In fact, OZ Racing has supplied its forged aluminum or magnesium wheels to every World Rally team since 2000, to seven out of ten F1 teams (including Ferrari) since 2010 and to every single Formula-E single-seater since the beginning of the competition. . “The big names in the sector choose us because we are creative, efficient and quick in fulfilling their requests – underlines Bernoni – but I would like to specify that we do not give our wheels to anyone. The racing world is certainly an excellent and useful showcase for developing the product, but the racing department must still bring the right profits to the company ”.

In the balance sheets of OZ Racing, motorsport supplies reach a maximum of about 15 percent of turnover and if the pandemic has led to a slight contraction (in the order of 1-2 percent) in orders due to the lower number of races, the Department after market – which has always represented the main business of the company – has amply compensated for the slight decrease with a boom in purchases: “Extraordinary circumstances have occurred that have practically blocked the purchase of the new one and consequently, people have chosen to spend more more to improve what they already owned ”explains Bernoni before discussing how Germany, USA and Japan are the reference markets for OZ wheels followed by Italy in which the company records 20 percent of sales.

Finally, other branches of excellence of OZ Racing are the direct systems designed ad hoc for some road supercars produced by Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin and above all, a know how at the top of the sector as regards the new frontiers of electrified mobility. Department in which the Venetian company has already accumulated six years of experience as a unique supply for Formula-E by proposing effective solutions – and avant-garde patents – aimed at optimizing EV performance in terms of design, aerodynamic fluidity and energy recovery under braking .
