MEXICO CITY (AP) — With a goal from Ecuadorian Nicolás Micolta in the first half, Pachuca rescued a 1-1 draw against América on Tuesday in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals.

The American Alejandro Zendejas put the locals ahead in the 12th minute, but Micolta declared equality in the 39th minute.

The return match will be next Tuesday at the Hidalgo stadium in Pachuca, a city in central Mexico.

In the other key, the Columbus Crew of the MLS receives Monterrey this Wednesday.

With the tie, América needs any victory to advance to what would be its first final of this tournament since 2021, when it lost to Monterrey.

The Águilas, the most successful team in CONCACAF with seven championships, have not been crowned since the 2015-16 season.

Pachuca has a slight advantage in the series due to the away goal, which is the criterion for breaking the tie. If the Tuzos tie without goals in their stadium, they will advance to their first final since 2016-17 when they won their fifth regional title.

America could advance with a tie as long as it is by more than one goal.

The Eagles took the lead in a quick transition in which Zendejas took advantage of a rebound inside the area and finished with a powerful left-footed shot that entered the left post.

Pachuca improved and came close to equalizing in the 35th with a shot from the Dutch Ousama Idrissi, deflected by Luis Malagón.

Shortly after, in a free kick play, Micolta took advantage of a cross from the right and connected with a header that beat Malagón to make it 1-1.

In the second half, América dominated possession, but generated little danger at the rival goal. A shot by Christian Calderón in the 53rd that was deflected by goalkeeper Carlos Moreno was the best opportunity to regain the lead.

The rest of the second half, the Eagles tried several times to surpass Moreno, but without disturbing him.
