According to the Swedish Academy, Gulner’s works influenced colonialism and showed sympathy and insight for the fate of refugees between different cultures and continents, and therefore won the award.
Gulna is 73 years old, born in Tanzania, and moved to the UK when he was young. He was a professor at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom. According to the school’s description, Gulner’s academic major includes post-colonial literature and colonialism-related topics in India and Africa. There are about a dozen of his books, many of which deal with refugee issues.
Gulner’s novels include Memory of Departure in 1987, Paradise in 1994, Afterlives in 2020, etc.
“Paradise” depicts the story of a boy who grew up in Tanzania in the early 20th century. This work won the Booker Prize, while “The Afterlife” continues the storyline of “Paradise”.
The picture shows that on October 7, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Mats Malm, attended a press conference where the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature was announced. The chairman of the Nobel Committee on Literature, Anders Olsson, commented on the 2021 Nobel Prize winner Guerner at a press conference. At the same time, Gurner’s work was also exhibited at the Swedish Academy.
Gurner is the fifth African-American writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
