The neurologist and psychiatrist Pier Maria Furlan died. He was 78 years old. Born in Turin on April 15, 1943, he was dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Turin, among the first organizers and director of a hospital mental health department, but above all among those responsible for the closure of the Collegno asylum.
Thus he described those environments that he knew well in an essay published in 2016 – “Beat the madman on the front page” – which traces the history of the years preceding the closure of the asylums: “Containers of what was socially repulsive, contributed to an even more social sedation easily accessible, with the very useful psychiatric drugs that left the conflicts intact ».
