Peking Opera Legend Sun Zhengyang Passes Away at 93

Shanghai, China – The world of Peking Opera is mourning the loss of Sun Zhengyang, a legendary performer who passed away at the age of 93. Sun, a national first-class actor at the Shanghai Peking Opera Theater, succumbed to illness at the No. 6 People’s Hospital in Shanghai on March 7.

Born in 1931, Sun Zhengyang dedicated his life to the art of Peking Opera. He began his training at a young age and quickly rose to prominence in the industry. Known for his crisp voice, sharp recitation, and humorous performances, Sun was recognized as the “Famous Chou in the South of the Yangtze River”.

Throughout his career, Sun Zhengyang performed in numerous plays and shared the stage with iconic artists such as Zhou Enlai, Xinfang, and Gai Jietian. His portrayal of “Luan Ping” in “Taking Tiger Mountain by Wisdom” was particularly memorable, leaving a lasting impression on audiences.

Even in his later years, Sun continued to perform for his fans and mentor young performers. He was passionate about passing on his knowledge and skills to the next generation of Peking Opera artists.

Sun Zhengyang’s memorial service is set to take place on March 11, allowing friends, family, and fans to come together to celebrate his life and legacy. His contributions to the world of Peking Opera will never be forgotten.
