Jinsheng Cinema Celebrates 90th Anniversary with Lantern Festival Poetry Event

Yangcheng Evening News all-media reporter Ma Siyong and correspondent Li Xuan covered the recent Lantern Festival celebration at Jinsheng Plaza in Yongqingfang, Guangzhou. The event, titled “I will be with you in this life, and this love will last forever – the 90th anniversary theme event of Jinsheng Cinema and the Liwan Lantern Festival Poetry Festival,” brought together talented and beautiful individuals to enjoy lanterns and poetry.

The event featured a performance of the famous poem “Jinsheng Cinema” by poet Huang Lihai, delivered by young actor Chai Xinyi. The poem evoked nostalgia among older attendees who remembered their experiences at Jinsheng Cinema, which was built in 1934 on Enning Road, Liwan District. The cinema was not only a popular movie theater but also a venue for Cantonese opera, song and dance performances.

Citizens Li Guocheng and Zhang Luna shared their memories of Jinsheng Cinema, reminiscing about studying, dating, and getting married while frequenting the cinema. Zhang Luna recalled childhood trips organized by her school to watch movies at Jinsheng Cinema, while Li Guocheng fondly remembered it as a date spot during their courtship and marriage.

Former manager Zhang Ruilin narrated the cinema’s popularity in the 20th century, noting that it was often difficult to secure tickets due to high demand. He mentioned that during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, movie showings ran late into the night, attracting young couples for romantic outings.

Reflecting on the close connection between the community and Jinsheng Cinema, Zhang Ruilin shared an anecdote about citizens generously lending their bicycles to the cinema’s “film runners” to ensure timely movie screenings. The support and fond memories shared by residents highlight the special place Jinsheng Cinema holds in Guangzhou’s cultural history.
