Revolutionizing Television Once Again: The Anticipated Return of Sandokan with Can Yaman

The Italian fiction based on the successful character that revolutionized television in the 70s, Sandokan, has started filming once again. 60 years after the premiere of the first film about the famous privateer, the character of Emilio Salgari returns to the small screen. The highly anticipated Italian series will feature Can Yaman as the protagonist, marking his return to filming in Italy after starring in Violeta como el mar.

The original version of Sandokan for television was released in January 1976 with Kabir Bedi in the lead role, becoming a massive success and creating a fan phenomenon in the late 70s. Can Yaman, having already captured audiences with his role in Erkenci Kus: Dreaming Bird, is set to continue this success with his portrayal of Sandokan.

Described as “a great epic with a strong environmental focus” by Variety, the series is set in the mid-19th century on the island of Borneo, where the native Dayak tribes are dominated by the ruthless British colonial power. Sandokan, a pirate leading a motley crew, has his life turned upside down when he meets and falls in love with Marianne, the daughter of the British consul.

Despite the multiple adaptations of Salgari’s character over the years, including a popular 90s cartoon series, the new Sandokan series is expected to capture the hearts of audiences once more. After months of preparation, filming for the series began on April 22, but viewers may have to wait until the end of 2024 or even the beginning of 2025 for its release. The series will be broadcast in Italy by RAI and distributed globally by Fremantle, except in Spain where it will be aired by Mediterráneo Mediaset España Group.

Can Yaman leads an international cast in the new Sandokan series, including Ed Westwick, John Hannah, Alessandro Preziosi, and Alanah Bloor. The series is highly anticipated by fans of the Turkish actor, and it is likely to be broadcast on Telecinco in Spain. Keep an eye out for this exciting new adaptation of a beloved character from television history.
