Say goodbye to stress with E-Ducato

by admin

ROME – Driving an electric van reduces the stress of drivers. This is the result of a new study by Fiat Professional carried out in London, which revealed how the quieter cockpit of an electric van makes drivers feel less stressed than driving a traditional internal combustion vehicle. The “Van Delivery Stress Test”, the name of the one-of-a-kind study on vans, was commissioned to better understand the physiological and psychological impact on drivers when comparing different cab noise levels in an electric light commercial vehicle. and with internal combustion engine. Fiat Professional conducted the test in collaboration with Dr Duncan Williams, a psychoacoustics specialist who has previously worked at the University of Oxford, to highlight the recent arrival in the UK of the E-Ducato, its first fully electric van. Focusing on cabin noise and its link to stress, the drivers’ biometric responses revealed that the E-Ducato was less stressful than its internal combustion counterpart. Overall, the drivers produced significantly lower levels of sweat, had a lower heart rate and a lower body temperature than the traditional van.

Drivers also reported marginally lower levels of stress when they answered the perceived stress questionnaire for the electric E-Ducato, reporting in the questionnaire “very low in-cab noise levels”, no “audible engine sound or noise”, “Quieter, which I like” and “quieter to drive”. Acoustically, the diesel engine was 10 dB louder than the E-Ducato, almost four times the volume of the electric van, which roughly corresponds to the difference between someone speaking from a meter away versus someone shouting from the same distance. “We already know that noise on the roads is a real problem for people who are not part of the traffic, but finding out how drivers respond at the wheel is still very new territory – explained Dr. Duncan Williams – The results clearly show, above all. the smartwatch readings, a strong correlation between the E-Ducato’s quietness and lower stress levels than in an internal combustion van. A number of attendees found it to sound comforting and more familiar. It’s a fascinating result, and given the shift to electric commercial vehicles, it shows there are potentially more benefits for van drivers going electric than things like fuel cost savings. ” Biometric measurements were collected during each trial using an Empatica E4 device, a medical grade wearable device similar to a high-end Fitbit. The device measured skin temperature, sweat levels, and heart rate while driving the electric E-Ducato and the diesel Ducato. (Maurilio Rigo)
