Sega intends to adapt Atlus games into live-action film and television works, in order to further expand the film and television business.
Sega revealed exclusively to IGN that the expanded narrative format is a new and important part of Sega’s overall business strategy. That’s why Sega is lifting the restrictions and allowing Atlus’ games to be adapted into live-action films. Atlus’ credits include several critically acclaimed series including Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, and Catherine.
“The world of Atlus is full of drama, cutting-edge style and captivating characters,” said Toru Nakahara, head of production at Sega Entertainment and producer of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Prime animated series. A lot of stories — like the Persona series — resonated strongly with fans, and we saw an opportunity to expand on those stories in ways that players never saw — or played — . ‘
He added: ‘Sega is working with Atlus to bring these stories and worlds to new audiences through new mediums. ‘
Sega didn’t say which studios they would like to work with, other than to say that they are discussing live-action projects with multiple studios and producers.
Founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1986, Atlus is known for its character and story-driven JRPGs. One of its most popular IPs is the Persona series, which usually features high school students and revolves around a mysterious force they encounter that threatens the world. Atlus recently announced Persona 3 Pocket Edition, Persona 4 Gold Edition, and Persona 5 Royal Edition
