Song Chunli’s life accumulation makes the performance come naturally – Xinhua English.news.cn

Jin Yueji in “The World” combines mother, mother-in-law, and leading cadres, and is a rare female role in domestic dramas. With her delicate and precise performance, Song Chunli vividly interprets the three-dimensional, multi-faceted and proportionate sense of this complex character. Throughout her recent appearances in “Strategy of Yanxi Palace”, “Procuratorial Procurator” and “The World“, almost every role Song Chunli has created can leave an unforgettable impression on the audience in a limited space. In an interview, Song Chunli told reporters how she made the performance come naturally through the accumulation of “reading countless people” in her life, and how she shattered her self-confidence into the role and regained the confidence of an actor.

Treat the cutscene as the epic scene

Reporter: In the past few years, the characters you played in “Story of Yanxi Palace”, “The Prosecutor’s Team” and “The World” were very different in terms of circumstances and personalities, but they were all successful. Do you have any tips for choosing works?

Song Chunli: I think my life is good. These few dramas are not big. There are more than 60 scenes in “Story of Yanxi Palace”, 69 scenes in “The World“, and a little more in “The Prosecutor’s Team”. recognized by the audience. A friend also said that the 70-year-old lady has become popular again after acting. To sum up, these characters are all supporting roles, but the characters are all on the main line of the plot, which is more convenient. I chose these characters because they can impress me. I have the urge to create the characters, the space for imagination, and the idea of re-creation. This may be the characteristic of actors in our age group. That’s how old actors are, no matter how many scenes they have, just live up to themselves and live up to this drama.

Reporter: Jin Yueji in “The World” is a rare high-ranking female role in domestic dramas. How do you grasp this role?

Song Chunli: In everyone’s impression, senior cadres like Jin Yueji may be sitting upright, but when I saw Jin Yueji in the script, my old chief and old leader flashed in my mind. I have accumulated a lot of such characters and know a lot. For example, Jin Yueji’s teaching to Zhou Bingyi in the play draws on the old leaders of the Guangzhou Military Region when I was young. The feeling that is both like a parent and different from my own parents is to help and teach young people from a high position without losing sight of it. Amiable.

Reporter: What kind of designs will there be in character shaping?

Song Chunli: I told Director Li Lu from the very beginning that I only had 69 scenes in “The World“, and I hoped that all my cutscenes could be filmed as major scenes, otherwise I would be very sorry. I especially want to show the rich layering of this character. 69 scenes should not be wasted, and the character should be three-dimensional, not flat and didactic. If the characters just play the official tongue with their hands behind their backs, it will be meaningless at all. When I act, I use the dialectics of contradiction to guide myself. If a high-level cadre character speaks Mandarin and honest words, and acts in a high-sounding manner, then it will be dismissed. For example, when Feng Yue left Jin Yueji, to show that the grandparents and grandchildren get along well, I specially added a scissors hand farewell design to Jin Yueji, which can draw in the relationship between the characters, and also reflects the changes Feng Yue brought to Jin Yueji in the process of getting along. I usually can’t find glasses cloth at home, so I added this life experience into Jin Yueji’s daily routine.

“The World” calls for “return of true feelings”

Reporter: This heavy life history of the common people is like a retrospective after the great changes of the times in Chinese society, bringing the audience back to the pure and humanistic era. What do you think of the huge response this period drama has caused to the audience?

Song Chunli: “The World” tells the story of the three brothers and sisters of the Zhou family. In the finale, Zhou Bingyi wrote the last letter to his younger siblings with all his apologies and love for Dongmei. In my opinion, this sincere letter is the family motto of the Zhou family, and it sublimates the theme of the whole play. A reporter once interviewed and asked me what my family style was. I grew up in an ordinary family without any ancestral training, but I learned from my parents to be honest and kind. When I was young, I asked someone to bring home a pack of lychees. My mother would carry lychees, and I wished all the neighbors in the hospital could eat them. Maybe my parents could not eat them, but they were very happy. This is similar to the one in “The World” The simple and warm atmosphere is the same. In the current urban society, everyone may feel that “love has faded”, and calling for the return of true feelings has become a common social emotion. “The World” just echoes this emotion, which may be the charm of this work. Our generation went through that era and really miss it.

Reporter: Did the creation process of “The World” also make you feel that you have returned to the artistic creation atmosphere of that era?

Song Chunli: That’s right, directors and actors in that era were all dedicated to creating. Acting is to find feelings through the actors’ words, so I am very grateful to Director Li Lu for forming a team like “The World“, everyone is going up with enthusiasm, no one wants to lose the chain, everyone is a virtue Shuangxin’s good actor. In the play, I have a large part of my lines that are all jargon. After filming no less than ten times, Xin Baiqing accompanies me over and over again in the show, without any confrontation, which makes me particularly moved. In the production crew, everyone always corrects their words whenever they have a chance, and they have a lot of sparks. Good actors achieve each other. It’s like playing table tennis. If you hit it, the other party will always catch it. After the first round of “The World” ended, the crew gathered once. Everyone was really happy to meet each other. They praised each other, not compliments, but sincerely and sincerely appreciated each other. Now that the second round is airing, I’m still watching it. I’m really impressed and moved.

Break yourself to achieve role

Reporter: You won the Best Supporting Actress in the “Film and TV Role Model 2021 General Evaluation List” selected by Beijing Daily for her role as Hu Xue’e in the “Procuratorial Team”. This character is in stark contrast to the more dignified characters you’ve created in your career. What was the creative process like?

Song Chunli: Playing Hu Xue’e was a breakthrough for me. At the beginning of the show, the character Hu Xuue came alive in my mind. But as soon as I arrived on the set, I suddenly lost confidence, I couldn’t let go of myself, I couldn’t tear up my so-called dignified face. The biggest disaster for actors is that they are not confident. If they are not confident, they are not right. If they are confident, they are right. The first scene I filmed was Hu Xue’e crying and fussing in the hospital, trying to play the role of the character who was sloppy and rolling. At that time, I couldn’t play it at all. I went into the bathroom, looked in the mirror, slapped myself a few times, and then shouted in my heart, “I can do it, I can do it”, I stood up and performed this scene.

Reporter: Broken yourself to create a character?

Song Chunli: Yes, it is to break your self-esteem, and then integrate into the role. You can no longer think that you are Song Chunli and you are Hu Xuue. From that day on, I gained the confidence to play Hu Xue’e and gradually found the feeling of this character. Everyone can’t imagine that I can play such a role, and I can’t imagine myself. Playing Hu Xue’e, I have to maximize my tension. Every scene is full of screaming, fussing, and crying. Every day when I arrive at the scene, I have to perform the character’s hysterical state. It is indeed a physical and mental exhaustion. In the process of filming, I also fell seriously ill. I especially thank Director Li Lu for trusting me in this play. In the filming of “The Prosecutors Team”, I overcame my lack of self-confidence, and I also had mutual trust with Director Li Lu, even relying on and relying on. The director said he owed me a clean role, so we collaborated on “The World” again.

Reporter: Looking back on your artistic career, what is your outstanding experience in art?

Song Chunli: I just want to say one word, “enlightenment”. The profession of an actor has to be understood by yourself. If you are a caring person, you will store a lot of things. What did the actor end up fighting for? It is your cognition, emotion and experience of life. This is a process that requires careful accumulation. The more you store, the more handy the performance will be. Thanks to my earnest attitude in art for more than 50 years, I have formed a rich storage. I was born in a large courtyard in Beijing when I was a child. When I was a teenager, I joined the army family. After middle age, I had the experience of participating in politics. When I play “The World“, I can mobilize all kinds of experiences in my life and all kinds of characters I meet in the performance.

Reporter: This storage and accumulation has become a bonanza for an actor.

Song Chunli: Yes, now when I try to figure out a character, as long as she is a character in my mind, she will show it naturally. Acting is no longer deliberate, it is a natural feeling, so the cultivation and accumulation of actors are too important. To perform is to hold a handful of sand in your hand. You should try to let it flow out as little as possible. If it flows out, there will be nothing left. So, be a caring person.

Fate has favored me very much. I like acting, and I am still acting today. This is a very happy thing. Actors are a profession that is directly linked to fame and fortune. Actors must understand themselves and respect themselves, and don’t treat themselves as money-making machines. Your attitude towards life is different, the life trajectory formed is different, and the result of life is different. (Reporter Qiu Wei)
