Spain, with the new highway code is war on distracted motorists

Small reminder for those traveling to Spain, soon driving a car. The new Highway Code will come into force in the Iberian country on 21 March. It provides discrete bottlenecks (gentle euphemism), for motorists. Spanish lawmakers have decided to prevent distractions. What does it mean?

That, for example, in the case of use of the mobile phone, the fine remains at 200 euros, while the number of points removed goes from 3 to 6. And, attention, attention, holding the device with your hands is also considered an infringement: interpretation is that you are using it. So it constitutes a distraction.

Another case? Driving without a seat belt fastened: a fine of 200 euros, and even 4 points less on the driving license. It also applies to motorcyclists who do not wear a helmet.

That’s not all: the new traffic law also covers the illegal use of radar detectors. Those who use them to locate speed cameras risk 200 euros and another 3 points on their driving license. Since it seems that this thing is quite widespread in Spain, the penalties will also be applied to those who do not use them but have installed them in the car.

Last but not least, the new Spanish CDS will abolish the 20km / h margin on the speed limit in case of overtaking. Whoever carries out the maneuver will have to pay attention to the limit of that road section, and not exceed it by 20. Otherwise there is another 100 euros for the risk.

Ah, sorry. There is also something for bikes, scooters and scooters: considered vehicles by law. They will be prohibited from driving on sidewalks and pedestrian areas, as well as motorways, interurban roads, intersections or highways that run within the city and urban tunnels. For those who want to take risks, have 200 euros ready in their wallet, in case there is someone from the Guardia Civil nearby.
