Swiss police arrest teenager accused of stabbing Jewish man

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A teenager was arrested on suspicion of stabbing and seriously injuring an Orthodox Jewish man on a Zurich street, Swiss police said Sunday.

Police said in a statement that they suspected anti-Semitism was the motive for the attack, which occurred on Saturday night.

Police said they received a call about an argument between several people at 9:35 p.m. According to his preliminary findings, the attacker attacked the 50-year-old man “and seriously injured him with a knife.”

Police described the attacker as a 15-year-old Swiss citizen and said they detained him at the scene.

The Swiss Organization of Jewish Communities said it was “deeply shocked that a member of the community was the victim of such an attack.”

“Physical attacks on Jewish people are very rare in Switzerland,” the group said. “The Jewish community has been free of such life-threatening behaviors for two decades. However, there has been a significant increase in such physical attacks since October 7.”

Anti-Semitic incidents have grown across Europe since the war between Israel and Hamas began. Hamas-led militants stormed southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostage. Israel responded with a military campaign in the Gaza Strip in which more than 30,000 Palestinians have died since then.
