The car? In Italy we change every seven and a half years

by admin

ROME – Every seven and a half years Italians change cars. And, in the average life of a motorist, at least five vehicles have been purchased. All this emerges from a research that Facile.it and MiaCar commissioned to the mUp Research and Norstat institutes.

If at a national level the survey found that 15% of motorists change their car every 5-6 years and 12.5% every 7-8 years, it should be noted that 5.3% of respondents declared to replace their car more frequently (at most every 2 years), while 19% do so not before at least 10 years have elapsed. It is interesting to note that the data vary considerably according to gender and geographical area. Men, for example, change their car every 6 and a half years, more frequently than women who, on the other hand, tend to replace their vehicle only after 8 and a half years.

On a territorial level, however, it emerges that motorists residing in Northern Italy change their car more often, on average, before the seventh year, while in the South and on the Islands every 7 and a half years and in Central Italy even every 8 and 3 years. months.

What are the reasons for changing the car? Although each vehicle has its own history, in general, the first reason that pushes Italians to reach out to their wallets to buy a new model is the age of the vehicle; either for affection, or for an economic question, 55% of the respondents stated that they only change their car when it becomes old. 36% of the interviewees, on the other hand, explained that they had replaced the car because the previous one had traveled too many kilometers, while 25.6% of the respondents did it because it was no longer suitable for family needs. And if 17.6% had to buy a new vehicle because the previous one was damaged due to an accident, there is no shortage of those who usually change their car after a few years because they always want to drive a new vehicle (10.8%) .

The survey focused on the first car; if it is true that the driving license is normally taken around the age of 20 and that at the beginning many use a family vehicle, Italians wait, on average, up to 26 and a half years to buy their first car. Although there are no significant differences between men and women (who buy the first car, respectively, at 26 and 27 years old), the age varies more markedly at the territorial level; in the north of the country the first car is bought at the age of 25, in central Italy after the age of 26 and in the south and on the islands even after the age of 27.

Maybe it is because it is the first car purchased, and therefore we try to pay more attention, but on average this vehicle is changed after eight and a half years. Interestingly, the duration is different between men and women; the former change their first car, on average, after 7 years and 4 months, while women wait longer and only replace the first model after almost 10 years.

At a geographical level, however, the first car lasts longer in Central Italy (9 years and 8 months) and in the South and in the Islands (just over 8 years and 7 months), while in the North of the country it is replaced, on average, earlier. of 8 years of age.
