Director James Cameron recently told Empire magazine:Avatar 2: The Way of Water” is currently about three hours long (the film is not finished yet, the exact number may change in the future), and I don’t think there is any problem with this length.
He said he expected some people to complain that “this film is too long”, saying: “I don’t want to hear anyone bemoan the length of the film, after all they can sit down and watch the show for eight hours. I guess there must be some time. Critics would say, ‘Ah, this three-hour movie is so painful’. Shut up and let me stop for a while. I’ve watched my kids sit there and watch five episodes in a row 1-hour episode. Families, it’s time for a major social paradigm shift: stand up and pee while watching.’
The theatrical version of the first “Avatar” released in North America in 2009 was 162 minutes long, and the extended version was 178 minutes, which is also close to three hours.
Cameron also responded to some viewers’ negative reviews of “Avatar”: “Those Internet trolls will say: ‘Nobody cares about this movie, I can’t remember the name of a character, and I can’t remember the movie at all. What.’ Then they look at it again and they’re like, ‘Ah, okay, sorry, I’ll shut up now.’ So I don’t worry about that.”
“Avatar 2: The Way of Water” tells the story of Jack taking his family to a “safe haven” in the reef area and encountering the Metkayina tribe when his idyllic life was disrupted by the RDA that returned to Pandora mining. “Jack Sully” Sam Worthington, “Princess Neytini” Zoe Saldana, “Chilly” Sigourney Weaver, “Colonel Quach” Stephen Long, “Noam” “Joe David Moore, Giovanni “Parker” Ribisi Return, and Kate Winslet as Reef Terran Freediver Ronald, Michelle Yeoh as Dr. Karina Mogu, Cliff Curtis will play Reef leader Tonovari, and Eddie Falco will play General Ardmore.
“Avatar 2: The Way of Water” will be released in North America on December 16.
