Excerpts from foreign media evaluations:
USA TODAY: The third installment is still crammed with too many characters and subplots, but it also makes up for some of the mistakes of the previous one. This one reemphasized Fantastic Beasts, and another political leaning. It digs deep into the dark theme and offers a glamorous side.
The Playlist: It’s safe to say that the Fantastic Beasts franchise has finally found its footing. The latest one is the funnest and most exciting in the series, enough to make you look forward to a sequel (there should be one), rather than reject it.
“Empire”: The film doesn’t cast the spell of the Harry Potter movies – but it has solid plot and heartfelt moments that bring a little light to the wizarding world at its darkest.
Screen Daily: Impeccably made, but only intermittently gripping, the third is deeply epic and has the same flaws as the first two.
The Hollywood Reporter: It’s not as full of distracting details as the last one, but despite its more refined plot, this two-hour movie feels like a test of patience.
The film will be released in mainland China on April 8 this Friday. Comment interception:
The Playlist: With a certain level of certainty, Fantastic Beasts has finally found its footing. This one is the funnest and most enjoyable of this relatively young franchise, enough to actually make you look forward to the next one (if there is one) rather than worrying about it.
Arizona Republic: There are enough eye-catching special effects and lovable critters to keep you entertained for two and a half hours.
The Canadian Globe and Mail: Even if Yates and the film team made the sensible choice to replace Depp with Mikkelsen, the film was too long.
The Guardian: Well-meaning entertainment product, but still lacking narrative weight and structure.
Polygon: An apparent attempt to steer has unfortunately strayed, and an identityless series has drifted into a meaningless vortex, searching for a reasonably stable new direction.
Slant Magazine: The “subtleties” seem to have all disappeared from the wizarding world.
Slashfilm: The best of the spinoff series so far, but it’s still missing the magic.
Screen Rant: A step in the right direction for this devious series, but there’s still a long way to go.
The Telegraph: For at least an hour it wasn’t clear what was going on, or how one scene was connected to the next, or what any of the characters were trying to do.
