China News Service, Beijing, July 20 (Reporter Ying Ni) As an original invitation unit repertoire for the 70th anniversary of the founding of Beijing People’s Art Theater, the original drama “Half My Life” produced by Huang Ying Studio will be held from August 6 to On the 15th, it was staged at the Beijing Human Arts Experimental Theater.
“Half My Life” is adapted from a series of autobiographical literary works by Mr. Lao She, with Chang Shun, who was born on the New Year’s Eve, as the protagonist. The round trip between Peking and London also brought his prototypes back to real life, and finally ended at the node of his half-life. It seems unfinished, but it is also a kind of retrospective and prophecy.
Huang Ying, who is the screenwriter and director, has been creating this drama for 6 years. Previously, Huang Ying’s understanding and feelings for Lao She were the same as those of most readers – “a powerful symbol”, “as a Beijinger, I also have a natural affection and closeness to him”, the kind of since reading The accumulated intuition for Lao She is “wisdom”, “humorous” and “warm”…
It was not until she got older that she re-read and intensively read Lao She under the right opportunity, including novels, essays, dramas and even comic works, Huang Ying began to gain a new understanding on the professional level, “Lao She’s style is not like what we thought. He is so single, but it is very changeable and uneven, and his writing skills are really superb. In addition, he has seen many people of all kinds, and he has goodwill and equality for these specific people.” “A small drink. The child who grew up with dry cake powder always has a sense of justice in his heart that he can draw a knife to help at any time, and wants to resist, but because he is not strong and powerful, the pen has become his only ‘weapon’… In life, he has been fighting since childhood. 0, but in writing, he can give everything to fight.”

Why not touch so many existing Lao She works, but create a new one instead? Huang Ying thinks that this is the motivation brought by the self-conscious question after being shaken by Lao She’s works as a creator: “I am very concerned, how did he achieve such a level? A person with many different works, what is his life like?”
“Half My Life” has been revised several times during the six years of creation, and has undergone several overturns and re-layouts in terms of structure and content. An important part of this is Huang Ying’s interception and selection of Lao She’s work and life in London. .
“He wrote that the two cities of London and Peiping share a certain spirituality-the two ancient cities in history have nurtured the unique self-esteem and arrogance of generations of urbanites. For such a character, Lao She meticulously Record it, don’t refute it, don’t cover it up.”
At the end of the play, Huang Ying made up a meeting between Chang Shun and his father. In reality, Lao She’s father died when he was 3 years old, and his memory of his father is almost thin. The meeting in this scene happened in a dream of Lao She who was seriously ill. They met and talked. Before saying goodbye again, his father said to him, “Next time I see you, I hope you don’t look so ashamed.”
This is also a solid concept that Huang Ying wants to convey in “Half My Life”: “I think everyone has an end, you can never predict how it ends, but what we can do is when the end comes. When the time comes, we can walk over with ‘no shame’.”
This “Half of My Life” performance is a 2021 funding project of the Beijing Culture and Art Fund, and is also a cultural and artistic creation support project in Xicheng District, Beijing. While on stage, the performance of “Half My Life” will also launch a series of supporting activities and contents in conjunction with Dudu Library and the People’s Literature Publishing House.
