Eight months after its premiere, The Squid Game is still the biggest TV show on Netflix. In 28 days, Netflix subscribers watched 1.6 billion hours of The Squid Game. That’s more than double any other original series the streaming company has ever produced. Just as users were clamoring to see more, they had to accept the bad news — they might not see the show’s second season until 2024.
Game of Squid Season 2 coming in 2023 or 2024
This week, Vanity Fair shared a lengthy article on The Squid Game on its website. This article explores the production of the first season and the challenges director Hwang Dong Hyuk faced in securing funding.
At the end of the article, Vanity Fair revealed some information about the second season. According to the publication, Hwang Dong Hyuk is still in discussions with Netflix about the final stages of the second season. He doesn’t think the new season will actually be available on Netflix until late 2023 at the earliest, and possibly 2024.
It wasn’t what fans wanted to hear, but it wasn’t all that surprising. Because if the first season wasn’t as big a hit as it is now, the show could be over. Based on previous interviews, if Netflix decides to accept a second season, it sounds like Hwang Dong Hyuk will start from scratch. So the quick turnaround in season two never happened.
What will happen in the second season?
Here’s what the creators are willing to share about the next season of The Squid Game:
He (Hwang Dong Hyuk) only has about three pages of ideas that he intends to turn into a script, so there’s not much he can say except that there will be more games. “Mankind will be put to the test again through these games”.
While Hwang Dong-hyuk may already have a general idea of what the second season will contain, he’s not yet willing to share any specific details. When asked if the second season would focus on the same themes as the first, he told Vanity Fair — “I would like to ask the question, ‘Is true unity between human beings possible?'”
If you watched the first season you know the answer to this question from the contestants of the first game. Maybe the next set can break the cycle.
