Ernie Ball is a professional steel guitar player and musician who left the military to play clubs with local musicians in and around the Los Angeles area. During the day, he records radio and TV commercials for KTLA Los Angeles.

Ernie Ball runs a teaching studio that offers guitar lessons to aspiring players. It was by teaching these young students that he noticed the difficulty of bending strings and fingering guitar chords with heavy gauge strings.

Ernie Ball closed retail and moved to Newport Beach, California, to focus on ropes and accessories. Ernie also has visions of working part-time, surfing and flying a plane. However, the guitar business has taken a new and higher direction and things will never be the same.

With the huge success of Slinky’s line of electric guitar strings, sales are booming. The time is ripe to expand the business. In March 1979, Ernie Ball moved company headquarters to California’s central coast. Strings and Earthwood facilities are packed on the way to a new, modern factory in San Luis Obispo.

RPS (Enhanced Light String) Slinkys entered the market and quickly became an artist’s favorite. Heavy tremolo use was popular in the 1980s, and the RPS Slinkys is perfect for this application. RPS strings have additional brass wraps on the ball ends of the strings for added strength and stability.

The first Ernie Ball band fight on the Warped Tour in San Francisco. The Battle of the Bands 1 had 18 stops in its first year and had long-standing relationships with Kevin Lyman and The Warped Tour.

The Beefy and Not Even set joins the Slinky lineup. Realizing that younger players needed a thicker, thicker tone, Brian Ball created the best string sets for modern tunings, including D, D, and C#.
