The Teatro Nuovo will be evicted from Torino Esposizioni, the Municipality: “Debts for half a million”

TURIN. The story concerning one of the largest stages in the city, Teatro Nuovo, is about to end, as well as the Foundation of the same name which occupies the spaces. The latter will no longer have the facility under concession and by September will have to leave and take away all of her belongings. This is what the deputy mayor Michela Favaro said yesterday in the Sala Rossa: “The debt to the Municipality is 500 thousand euros”.
The City of Turin managed to recover half of this amount by foreclosing the money that the Region owed to the Foundation and which it had not yet given. But there is still a debt exceeding 20,000 euros that is very difficult to recover.
Unhappy management
All the promises made to modernize the premises have never been kept. The fees for the concession of the premises were never paid. The installments of the repayment plan agreed with Soris, the company that collects taxes, for the previous rents have not been paid.
The stage redevelopment works are underway
Now there is an urgent need to vacate the premises because the redevelopment works of the structure will soon start, which has almost 1000 seats and could host high-profile shows. An operation that is part of the wider recovery project of the Valentino area. Nonetheless, Palazzo Civico has decided to have the foundation remain in the theater until September. «But only to allow students and teachers of the Foundation to complete the school year. Then they will have to leave », Favaro assured.
Debts for years
Already in 2018 the Fondazione del Teatro Nuovo was drowning in debt. So much so that the former councilor for culture Francesca Leon spoke of a structural and economic problem to be solved. But she too stalled because she was afraid of jeopardizing the activities of the high school and the theater. So we sought and promised a solution that never came.
Even earlier, between 2014 and 2015 the debt of this reality was already around one million euros. Repayment plans had been studied but all were disregarded. The Foundation has never been punctual in paying the rent to the owner of the Municipality of Turin. And in addition to the rental problem, a dispute had arisen with Palazzo Civico over some works carried out in the building.
