The United Kingdom sanctions authorities of the Russian penal colony where Navalny died

LONDON (AP) — Britain has imposed sanctions on six people who ran the penal colony where prominent Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny died last week, the Foreign Office said Wednesday.

One of the six prison officials, sanctioned under British human rights standards, is Vadim Konstantinovich Kalinin, supervisor of the penal colony where the anti-corruption campaign leader was locked in solitary confinement. He was also denied medical treatment and forced to walk outdoors in temperatures of minus 32 degrees Celsius, the ministry said in a statement.

“It is clear that Russian authorities considered Navalny a threat and repeatedly tried to silence him,” Foreign Secretary David Cameron said. “That is why today we sanction the highest prison authorities responsible for guarding him in the penal colony where he spent his last months.”

He added: “Let those responsible for the brutal treatment of Navalny have no illusions, we will hold them accountable.”
