Hong Kong “The Warrior” by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), one of the iconic paintings of the American graffiti pioneer, has become the most expensive Western artwork ever offered at an auction in Asia and sparked a competition for rise among collectors between Hong Kong and New York. “Warrior”, a monumental work (183 x 122 cm) created in 1982, was sold today by Christiès in Hong Kong for 323,600,000 Hong Kong dollars, equal to 35,077,853 euros and 41,857,351 US dollars. It was estimated at around $ 30 million.
“Warrior” is a masterpiece that represents the apex of Basquiat’s creative production and for its evocative power it is placed next to “La Hara” and “Irony of Negro Policeman”, in which the young artist expressed all his anger, his violence in against society, an indictment in defense of the black population.
Painted at the height of his short career with acrylic, oil and spray paint on a wooden panel, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “The Warrior” is an imposing portrait that amply demonstrates “why the artist – underlines a statement from Christiès – is considered one of the most important painters of the last half century “.
