MILANO – Children in the car, the importance of the car seat. We have consulted an expert to understand exactly what can happen, in the event of an accident, when traveling with children who are not seated in the appropriate seats, or with defective or non-approved restraint systems.

Travel safely with children

In our video interview, Dr. Giovanna Baroni, expert in pediatrics, explains to us which are the most harmful incorrect behaviors for lsafety of children and what are the possible consequences in the event of an accident.

The statistics say it: most of the accidents happen during the daily commute, the ones we manage safely and in a repetitive way. The first cause of death in childhood is the road accident. In 2019, according to data from the ASAPS Observatory (on children aged between 0 and 13), 40 victims were registered in 38 accidents. In the event of an impact, a child’s small body can weigh up to twenty times as much as a result of thekinetic energy. It means that a child weighing 15 kg, for example, can weigh about 300.

In children, trauma can cause a lot of damage. Imagine – explains Doctor Baroni – what can happen to a child who is not housed in the appropriate seats. The first area where the child’s body collides in the event of an accident is the windshield. In children, head trauma can be lethal: hitting the head against the windshield is one of the most frequent causes of death in children ”.

The transport of children by car is regulated by article 172 of the Highway Code: anyone who does not use restraint devices (mandatory for children under one meter and fifty in height) is subject to an administrative sanction ranging from 83 to 332 Euros.
