Traveling in freedom, the camper

by admin

The fascination of the itinerant holiday in the open air is growing, lived in the intimacy of a camper or a caravan as close as possible to nature. According to data from the European Caravan Association, the vehicles in use in 2020 in Italy were 304,915 (1,397,213 in Germany and 1,098,800 in France) and the registration of new vehicles (caravans, but above all campers) from September 2020 to August 2021 increased in Italy 13.8%, Germany 16.8%, France 25%)

According to Bruno Andrea Ciattini, director of the PleinAir magazine, 2022 will be the year of uncertainty: «but I am convinced that there may be opportunities for relaunch. There is no lack of positive signs in the world of production. And also in services, such as the Tuscany Region project for the construction of equipped areas, especially in municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants. Sardinia is also moving in the same direction: everywhere there is a great desire to get going, to get distracted and find peace of mind ».

These days it could be one of the most accommodating choices for travelers eager to leave and also for … addicted to teleworking: being able to move around the house offers more freedom to choose and change dates and destinations, having all the small comforts with you, keeping your distance , without giving up the pleasure of exploring the generosity of nature and the peculiarities of the territories (culture, history, traditions) or working in more pleasant conditions, also combining sports activities such as cycling, kayaking, excursions.

Sixty itineraries
Unfortunately, the appointment with Itinerando, the first event dedicated to “experiential” tourism (with a large space reserved for fans of campers and caravans), scheduled for January 29-30 in Padua, has been suspended, but we are already thinking with optimism at the Salone of the Camper di Parma.

Meanwhile, a new edition of “Italia in camper” is about to be published: “It is a choice of freedom – underlines Franco Iseppi, president of the Italian Touring Club – a tourism capable of combining the pleasure of traveling and the desire to know, in favor of the stops, the field experiments of the many flavors – even in the proper sense, food and wine – that our territories know how to offer to those who are curious to look for them. “

The guide, created and renewed in collaboration with the PleinAir magazine here www.pleinair.it, offers 60 itineraries (including winter) with rough tracks. In addition to the main points to visit and useful information, it offers suggestions (also of a technical nature and management of the vehicle), curiosities, maps that are easy to consult, and itineraries of taste to be explored.

For each region, three itineraries have been identified, one of which is dedicated to a weekend and the others of two or three weeks.

Where the water flows
Leafing through the pages of the guide, one cannot help but notice that many of the itineraries approach streams, rivers and lakes and sea coasts. You travel through the valleys until you glide over plateaus and plains crowned by mountains, woods and panoramas where the water reflects the culture of the territories that are reflected in it, contemplating passages of ancient memory and events that bring devastation and well-being such as wars, floods, land reclamation. And again the churches, the residences of princes, fishermen and farmers or places of art and work, the signs of the civilizations of the peoples who have transformed the territory, shaped the landscape. Stories are written that with the right time we can cross calmly by identifying the indications not only to find the right direction, but to read the signs that determine the characteristics of each place and of the people who live there. Stopping to observe, enjoy knowledge and flavors, it is also inevitable to see the artistic expressions dug into the gorges, canals or caves of the water. And drawings traced on the back of the earth around which humanity has written a few pages.

Following the course of the rivers
The guide’s itineraries allow you to experience the trace of the waters. From the Savara stream that springs from the Nivolet lakes, in the heart of the Gran Paradiso, to the lakes of the Morozzo Oasis, to the rivers that run through the valleys of the Cuneo area (Varaita, Maira, Tanaro, Stura di Demonte) or the Valtellina, following the Adda, from Bormio to Lake Como. Or visit the Polesine marked by the passage of the Adige and the Po up to the suggestions of the Delta where it is sometimes difficult to understand where the sea begins.

In Liguria the suggestion is to go through the Nervia valley where there is a high concentration of countries awarded the Orange Flag of the TCI while in Tuscany, approaching the Serchio river, in a winding path towards the Garfagnana, you get to Lucca. The itineraries towards the Marmore waterfall, in Umbria, where the Velino river plunges into the Nera, or the rivers of the Cilento National Park and, in Sicily, or the Alcantara gorges, the river that springs from the Nebrodi and flows near Taormina.

The lakes and the coasts
One of the itineraries in Umbria goes around (also by canoe) along the shores of Lake Trasimeno. Other paths lead to the Tuscia Viterbese lakes (Bolsena, Vico and Bracciano) or to the tiny Duglia lake in the immense heart of the Pollino Park. And it seems that the artificial reservoirs of the Sila National Park are also very suggestive.

The eight thousand kilometers of coastline in Italy are a priceless heritage and it is therefore inevitable that the “Italia in camper” guide recommends, for example, the coasts of the Circeo national park, the trabocchi itineraries (traditional fishing machines), in Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia, the coasts of Palinuro and Marina di Camerota, the beauties of the Ionian coast of Calabria or the incomparable sea views of Sardinia.
