A 50-year-old British woman, Angela Glover, is the first confirmed victim in Tonga, the Pacific archipelago hit by the eruption of an underwater volcano, followed by a tsunami. The brother, Nicke Eleini, said her sister died trying to rescue her dogs. The body was found by her husband James. The family had launched appeals on Facebook to find Angela after her husband, climbing a tree, saw her dragged out of the water with the dogs.
James and Angela moved to Tonga in 2015 after their wedding. He had opened a tattoo parlor in Nuku’alofa, the capital. Angela, who has always had a deep love for dogs, had started an animal welfare charity called TAWS (Tonga Animal Welfare Society): her goal was to provide shelter and rehabilitation for stray dogs before seeking them a home.
Eilini told Sky news that Angela loved Tonga and its culture: “Since she was a child she dreamed of swimming with whales and Tonga had given her the opportunity to make this dream come true,” she added. Originally from Brighton, Angela had come to Britain to visit her family for the last time in 2019, before Covid.
