Turin capital of solidarity and civic commitment

by admin

Turin turns out to be the capital of civic commitment. The city fabric is scattered with clubs, laboratories and structures that focus on the collective and community effort for the construction of the common good. The first national ranking of “civic places” certifies it. What is it about? “Places of us”, defined them Gianluca Salvatori, general secretary of the Italian Social Foundation, who drew up the list: “They are important spaces for the community because they evoke something that was built together and for the interest of the community. Places that have the ability to inspire citizens’ civic engagement ». The ranking includes assets confiscated from the mafia and transformed into places of legality, cultural centers that animate neighborhood life or spaces that have launched solidarity and hospitality projects.

Together with the Touring club and the Adriano Olivetti Foundation, the Italia Sociale Foundation has collected 200 reports from all over Italy: 76 places have been selected. Turin is present in the ranking with 7 “civic places” (plus another, in Ivrea, if we consider the province). From North to South, no city has collected more awards: Milan and Rome are still at 5, Naples has only two. The selection was made on the basis of three criteria: civic significance, evocative capacity and accessibility. The organizers then considered three factors as added value: the sustainability of the model, participation and the ability to communicate the project. The map of the “civic places” has also landed at the Quirinale, with the delivery to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.

Recognition can be an incentive to network and engage other people

Enrica Baricco – president of CasaOz

The first place in Turin to appear is Bocciofila Vanchiglietta: «A transgenerational place and home to projects and initiatives aimed at young people, people with disabilities and asylum seekers» reads the “motivation”. CasaOz has also received the mark of place of civic commitment: it is a unique point of reference in Italy for sick or disabled children and their families, who during the course of treatment can find a place they can call home. Among the circles appears that of the Zoppa Duck, a piece of history of Barriera di Milano. For 25 years it has been pursuing a model of solidarity recognized by the whole neighborhood. Of the seven places, the Spaccio di Cultura is one of the most recent: the former newsstand in Piazza della Repubblica has been transformed into a space for the co-planning of cultural and educational activities. But people can also “request services that can improve everyday life, activating processes of social responsibility towards the community”, explains the Italy Social Foundation.

The “green” chapter could not be missing, represented by the General Gardens: an abandoned park that has become a green space that hosts 160 urban gardens, but it is above all a “place open to citizens and visitors and an educational center with training courses and workshops on topics related to ‘organic farming and rural jobs’. The first Italian neighborhood cultural center entirely dedicated to the themes of cultural welfare, Spazio BAC – Barolo Arti con le Comunità, has instead obtained the “stamp” because it “brings together culture, well-being and social inclusion” in the heart of the Aurora district. Finally via Dora Baltea 3, defined as a “community hub” which «hosts craft workshops, cultural projects and promotes cultural practices based on participation and activism».

According to Enrica Baricco, founder and president of CasaOz, a network between the various selected realities would be desirable: «Each of us, in his own small way, works to make society better – he says -. This recognition can be an incentive to meet and an opportunity to involve more people in our efforts ».
