Uber Eats, new measures for the safety of riders

by admin

ROME – Safety Checklist, Helmet verification and Ride Check. These are the names of the three new functions that Uber Eats has implemented to raise the safety level of its delivery workers who use both bicycles and mopeds. Three simple and effective features that are activated when a rider accesses the Uber app on a scooter or bicycle, by receiving a satefy checklist, a list of safety checks that requires confirmation. The rider must therefore certify that he has carried out a periodic check of the bicycle, has worn the protective equipment, used the smartphone holder, made sure that the bag is well fixed, respected the road regulations and, in the case of a moped, wear the helmet. For those who make deliveries by moped (about 35% of the total number of riders operating on Uber Eats in Italy), the Helmet Verification function has been added, which requires the user to take a selfie with the helmet well fastened before starting the round of deliveries. Safety always in evidence thanks to GPS data and sensor information (pre-approved by riders for use), with Uber’s RideCheck technology that allows you to detect various types of problems. In fact, the new functionality signals cases in which an unexpected long stop occurs during a delivery and warns in the event of a potential accident.

If a RideCheck is started from the Uber central, the rider receives a notification asking him if everything is okay, so that, through the app, he can let people know if everything is going well, or he can use the button to emergency or report an accident. Uber’s technology is constantly evolving and the company is working to add more application ranges in its RideCheck. And still on the subject of safety, Uber Eats offers its employees free of charge personal protective equipment, from the bicycle helmet, to the high visibility harness, rain suit, waterproof support for smartphones (to be applied to the bike), additional lights , and reflective armband. “Uber pays attention to road safety issues and our company is aware that riders are vulnerable road users – explains Jean-Adrien Monleau, general manager of Uber Eats Italy – These new functions are an important example of how technology can create a real impact on road safety, and is part of our commitment to prevent accidents, as well as to define new safety standards for the delivery sector “. In short, the one adopted by the company for food deliveries is certainly a model to be exported, perhaps applying it to all rental companies of micro-mobility devices, and the safety of users would benefit immediately.
