“Let’s build the future”, despite the pandemic period, does not stop and reap the fruits of months of intense work. The activities are all aimed at school-age children, inside and outside the classrooms. The actions of “Build the Future”, selected by the social enterprise “With children” as part of the Fund for the fight against child educational poverty, are many. In this phase, the activities of “Shared spaces” and ” Environment laboratory “. All under the aegis of Rosanna Venerando, coordinator of the project for the Coop. As part of “Shared Spaces” and “Environment Laboratory”, the students of the Ferraris institutes in Ragusa, Vittorini di Donnalucata (Scicli), the day center of the Convent of the Rosario in Scicli, the Portella della Ginestra di Vittoria, the Fermi di Vittoria, from Cataudella from Scicli, from Neglia Savarese from Enna and from Verga from Modica, IIs Isa Conti Vainicher from Lipari rolled up their sleeves to make concrete projects full of collaboration, creativity and practical skills.
The “Shared Spaces” activity ofG. Ferraris Institute of Ragusa involved 11 third-grade students in the construction of two outdoor benches and in the decoration of the separate waste collection containers. The students immediately highlighted the excellent organizational, practical and problem solving skills. For the decoration of the containers, recycled material was used to apply according to the logic of recycling, using scraps of fabric, plastic and aluminum caps, scraps of colored paper and plastic bottles. The construction of the outdoor benches involved the use of concrete blocks as a support and wooden beams as a seat. On the day of May 20, the students officially handed over the space they had created to the school, also giving a plaque to the teachers to thank them for the opportunity granted.
Intense days also for the boys ofElio Vittorini Institute of Scicli and Donnalucata. At work 21 the students of the second class B of the Institute, with the choice of the auditorium as an environment in which to intervene, also choosing reading and its importance as the central theme of the intervention. Hence the choice of equipping the Auditorium with two bookcases, a lectern and small hand-made decorative objects. The libraries were assembled by the students following the instructions given in the assembly manual. Totally by hand, however, the realization of the raw wood lectern, subsequently painted and embellished with paper and cardboard applications representing books. To enrich the still empty shelves, the boys gave voice to artistic creativity, creating small decorative objects with recycled materials. With the use of the pyrograph, small wooden squares have also been created that report maxims, aphorisms and thoughts on the value of reading. At Verga di Modica and Cataudella di Scicli, on the other hand, the commitment of the children was used to create wooden benches in the outdoor area of the school.
While the boys of the day center Maria.SS. of the Rosary of Scicli they have enhanced the entire courtyard with murals and restored the football pitch.
At the entrance of theIIS Fermi di Vittoria, as well asIC Door of the Ginestra di Vittoria the students wanted to create an easily usable space as a place for dialogue and relationships between “Peers” but also with “Others”. A colorful area that smells of books. They have created modular tables for circular communication, colored cabinets, comfortable seats and circular bookcases, to store objects available to everyone.
The “Environment Laboratory”, it is appropriate to say, is starting to bear its first fruits. A green space arranged, cleaned and prepared properly. In the coming months, the children will reap what they have sown, developing a sense of the group and belonging to a space.
At Portella della Ginestra (Vittoria) the Environment Laboratory has foreseen the organic cultivation in the greenhouse in the school garden dedicated to the memory of the little Alessio and Simone D’Antonio.
