Alternative Metal / Melodic Hardcore

Die Band Void Of Animus was founded in 2014. But good things take time and so appears with The Essence only this year the debut of the southern German band.

They themselves call their sound Alternative Metal, which made me expect a different, more shallow direction. But in the end they are probably right with their definition, because The Essence is a mixture of all hard varieties of metal and related genres.

The debut combines hard riffs, rousing grooves and many introduced melodies. The melodies are particularly evident when the two singers René Müller and Matthias Behringer cross their voices. While one provides the rough and extreme vocal part, brings Matthias the calmer and melodic part. But in addition, it is the many small ideas that make the first album by Void Of Animus make it so special.

Frustrated but alive

The start HERE with Alive! works perfectly. The song has a catchy groove and a catchy title. The monstrously playing rhythm section is fueled by the riffs. Singer René screams his frustration at relationship problems. So that all this doesn’t come across as too monotonous, the second singer brings in a warm voice as a counterpoint. The song will surely ignite immediately on stage, the melodies are catchy and intoxicating.

Why I wrote that Void Of Animus have more up their sleeve than just playing hard, you can find out in the following Enjoy My Happy Ending. The band gets it too HERE integrating unusual instruments and ideas without any problems. An almost oriental feeling combines with hardcore riffs and is crowned with melodies in the chorus.

It goes up quietly The Essence never closed, but the melodic parts provide a lot of variety. The best example of this is the slow start A Place Called Hometo which you just want to raise your fist in the air.

Hard and blunt

Of course, the five also want to prove it to us. That’s why there are also typical full service songs like the one below A Ruthless Serenade. Adding to the band’s frustrating and blunt lyrics are riffs and speed parts that will have the audience spinning in front of the stage. The title already says that Stab The Bitch turns out violently. This initially soft and finally harsh song sounds like a bad relationship drama and is musically implemented as such.

I can up The Essence can’t spot a bad song. Reshuffle the Cards and The Journey play skilfully with heaviness, groove and melody. Even if the album is slowly coming to an end, the band can still contribute with unusual tones Eclose to surprise. The start of the song is downright oriental-exotic, but unfortunately this is no longer reflected in the intensity that follows. I could get used to it like that!

One More Song then sadly it’s goodbye. The band once again lays down a mixture of hardcore groove and speed metal. Again surprise us Void Of Animus with the unusual and unmistakable use of a banjo, which makes my heart skip a beat for the last time.

Conclusion
Void Of Animus
bring a perfect mix of heaviness, melody and groove to their debut. Like the title The Essence the album sounds mature, has a hard-hitting production and surprises with many ideas and sometimes unusual instrumentation. 8,5 / 10
