The passion of a bowl of Mongolian milk tea
Everyone’s impression of the Mongolian grassland is that it is a vast grassland with abundant water and grass, cattle and sheep everywhere, which is always suffocating, but in fact, the grassland is full of crises and challenges. In seasons with little rain, rivers dry up, trees die, grasses wither, and wildlife loses shelter. In the dry summer, people have to face the constant threat of wildfires; in the cold winter, people have to endure long nights of dozens of degrees below zero.
In this cyclical environment, how did the Mongolians go through these thousand years? Perhaps, the short and strong Mongolian horses and herds of sheep, which are the animals that have accompanied the Mongolians for thousands of years, can allow us to find the real answer.
The Mongolians rely on cattle and sheep for a living in the continuous migration. Drink milk when you are thirsty, eat mutton when you are hungry, and wear a sheepskin coat when you are cold. There is no other choice, that’s all they have.

At the beginning of “Dance of the Top Bowl”, a steady background is laid with strings, and the woodwind instruments play the chirping of a golden eagle soaring in the sky.
Then the ethereal music shows the melody of Mongolian long-tuned folk songs. This melody depicts the open artistic conception between heaven and earth with an elongated tone. It is long and soothing, and expresses the unrestrainedness, bravery, enthusiasm and unrestrainedness of the Mongolians.
In this section of the Shen Yun Symphony, the erhu and the cello imitate the Mongolian singer’s long and straightforward singing, as well as the melody of the matouqin that accompanies him. Matouqin is a unique musical instrument in Mongolia, but it is not made of real horse heads, but only shaped like a horse head.
When the top bowl dance melody began, women dressed in traditional Mongolian costumes came out of the yurts one by one, opened their arms, and danced gracefully and powerfully.
