The 24th Beijing International Music Festival will be held in Beijing from October 9th to October 24th. With the theme of “Masters and Memorials”, this year’s music festival will provide the audience with 18 sets of 20 main unit concerts covering symphony, opera, vocal music, chamber music, percussion, film concerts and other categories within 16 days. .
Tribute to pioneers commemorating music masters in many ways
In the classical music world, it has long been a common practice to commemorate the contributions made to the history of music by collectively performing works on the birthday or death of a composer for a whole number of years. 2021 is the 50th anniversary of the death of Stravinsky, the 100th anniversary of the death of Saint-Saëns, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Piazzola, the 110th anniversary of the death of Mahler and the 110th anniversary of the birth of the Chinese composer Ding Shande. At the same time, composers such as Vivaldi, Prokofiev and Schoenberg also ushered in the anniversary in 2021.
According to the artistic director Zou Shuang, as usual, this year’s music festival will continue the tradition of commemorating the masters, but will present composers such as Guo Wenjing, Chen Qigang, Tan Dun and other Chinese composers who are deeply connected with the music festival in a more innovative and diversified mode, as well as predecessors Ding Shande. His musical works commemorate the master in the form of dialogue with Western composers. Among them, Chen Qigang will have a musical dialogue about Sino-French culture with French composer Saint-Saëns. Mahler and Ding Shande will start a dialogue between Eastern and Western art songs through the perspective of life and singing. Tan Dun will talk to Stravinsky, a master of modern music, and show the evolution of the concept of “modern” over a century.
In addition to the dialogue format, this festival will also present the Chinese premiere of Stravinsky’s opera “The Journey of the Prodigal Son” to commemorate the death of Stravinsky and the 70th anniversary of the birth of the first performance. The cast consisted of conductor Zhang Jiemin, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory of Music Chorus, Chinese young singers Xia Hou Jinxu, Zhou Zhengzhong, Li Jingjing and Han Yinpei.

The ballet film symphony concert “Romeo and Juliet” will be led by the young conductor Jing Huan, paying tribute to Prokofiev with an immersive sense of shock.
