The Mario + Rabbids: Spark of Hope showcase has just concluded, and as part of the event, fans have already made a lot of observations about the game’s gameplay and its prospects ahead of its October 20, 2022 release date. In honor of the event, we also had a chance to chat with Ubisoft Milan’s creative director, Davide Soliani, where we learned more about how the game will work.

When asked about the combat, and how it was designed to better fit Spark of Hope’s more open and explorable style, Soriani told us.

“Basically, this story partly explains it. There is an evil entity that tries to drain energy from everything, planets, inhabitants, and especially sparks, because these are creatures that are made of energy. In order to do that, It spreads this substance called Darkmess, which it once touched to transport the heroes to a dimension called Darkmess, where the heroes will face their enemies.

There are plenty of those Dark Legion watering holes or Dark Son tentacles – even bigger battles – scattered across the planet, but also roaming enemies that don’t exist in Kingdom Wars. Those enemies are wandering the planet, they’re kind of covered in this dark substance, and if you rush into them, you’ll be teleported to another dimension, where you’ll be focused on the fight.

As for why Ubisoft Milan decided to separate combat from exploration, Soriani explained it fully.

“We decided to do this because we wanted to have more combat compared to Kingdom Wars. So in Spark of Hope, players have more opportunity to decide if they want to follow the critical path or sideline as they please. Content, in order to do that we need to extract combat from planet creation because otherwise, it would be huge.
