December 1st is World AIDS Day, established to raise awareness of the disease triggered by the HIV virus. Transmissible from one infected person to another through an exchange of bodily fluids, HIV attacks the immune system. It weakens the defenses against infections and some types of cancer. The disease develops between two and 15 years. Since 1981, AIDS, the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, has killed over 25 million people worldwide. The virus can be fought through therapy consisting of three or more antiretroviral drugs.
