11 things to do to live more than 120 years, according to science

By the end of the century we will be able to live up to 130 years. For scientists, the secrets of longevity are eleven. Sex included.

To say it is a new study on longevity, carried out by the University of Washington and based on data from super-centenarians from 10 European countries, Canada, Japan and the United States. Good news, although to be fair, joining the club of the world‘s longest-lived people won’t be easy at all. The one hundred and twenty candles on the cake will be a goal for a few, very few. And whoever wants to reach it must assimilate a series of healthy habits: eleven, to be exact, from diet to… Sex. But let’s go in order.

Longevity: Live to 125 years by 2100 –

Scientists using sophisticated statistical calculations have been able to predict that the current world record of 122 years will almost certainly be broken and some individuals could live between 125 and 132 years. How many? This study, published in Demographic Research, does not say. But the mere presence of a few super-centenarians in a society indicates a greater longevity of the entire population. The question at this point is: how can we increase our life expectancy and hope to live more than 120 years?

Blue zones: where you live longer in Italy and in the world –

Few years ago a handful of places in the world have been identified where diet, lifestyle and social factors have produced incredible results from the point of view of longevity of their inhabitants. They define themselves zone blu and include the Sardinia, where there are several areas where life expectancy is considerably higher than the average, especially in the province of Nuoro (but not only). Other famous blue zones in the world are Ikaria in Greece, Okinawa in Japan, Nicoya in Costa Rica and Loma Linda in California.

Dan Buettner, the explorer who discovered the blue zones, has worked years to codify what the centenarians of the blue zones have in common: a list was published by the Washington Post: 11 habits shared by the over-90-year-old inhabitants of the blue zones, from diet to… Sex. There he is:

  • Lots of rest

    All centenarians sleep for the expected hours, a sign that sleep is one of the factors not to be overlooked when it comes to health.

  • Make use of (local) herbal teas and herbal teas whose benefits are known

  • Very little sugar, white flour or meat.

  • Mediterranean diet and longevity

    Olive oil, goat milk, wild vegetables, wine and coffee are all foods that have been shown to have various health benefits. And they are all present in our Mediterranean diet.

  • Avoid processed food

    In the blue areas on the table we end up mainly locally produced foods, coming from gardens and crops where, among other things, the presence of pesticides is very low.

  • Regular naps and longevity

    Scientists believe that resting in the afternoon would lead to a 37% reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease and therefore a longer life expectancy.

  • Healthy sex even after the age of 65

    According to a study conducted in Ikaria, 80% of men between 65 and 100 would have sex regularly, and 25% of them are particularly satisfied. A sign that even a peaceful relationship with sexuality in old age could contribute to longevity.

  • Stay engaged and involved

    This has proved true especially in Sardinia, where scholars have found a strong sense of community and participation in the social life of the elderly population.

  • Exercise

    Certainly could not miss the motion: especially in the islands, where the over 90s move a lot on foot and do not stop doing physical activity, such as gardening (compatibly with their possibilities).

  • Little stress and longevity

    The sense of community, very strong in the blue areas, and little attention to the passing of time contribute to the reduction of stress: haste and anxiety do not seem to belong to long-lived people.

  • Let healthy habits strengthen each other

    According to the scientists, it is enough to adopt some of the healthy habits on this list to spontaneously adhere to the others: resting more, for example, can help reduce stress, just as a healthy diet affects the ability to stay active and vice versa. In short, to live more (and better) just start changing some habits, following the example of the centenarians of the blue zones. The rest comes by itself… DNA permitting.
