A Billion Dollar Gift: Bronx Medical Students Receive Free Tuition

Medical students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx received some exciting news that will impact their future careers. Dr. Ruth L. Gottesman, Ed.D., chair of the Einstein Board of Trustees and member of the board of directors of Montefiore Health System, made a historic $1 billion donation to the institution. This gift, believed to be the largest donation ever made to a medical school in the United States, will ensure that all future students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine will study tuition-free.

Dr. Philip Ozuah, president and CEO of Montefiore Einstein, announced this groundbreaking donation on Monday, explaining that the funds will refund the spring 2024 semester tuition for current fourth-year students. Furthermore, starting in August of this year, all advancing students will also receive free tuition.

This generous gift is expected to attract a diverse and talented group of students who may not have had the means to pursue a medical education due to financial constraints. It will allow future healthcare leaders to focus on their studies and research without the burden of crippling student loan debt.

The billion-dollar donation was made possible by Dr. Gottesman’s late husband, David Gottesman, who passed away in 2022 after a successful career in Manhattan’s investment industry. Dr. Gottesman expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make such a significant contribution to medical education and to honor her late husband’s legacy.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine was founded in 1955 with a commitment to welcoming all students, regardless of financial circumstances. This generous donation will further that mission by removing financial barriers for aspiring medical professionals who otherwise may not have had the means to attend medical school.

Dr. Gottesman has been a long-time supporter of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, contributing to various research and education initiatives. Her dedication and philanthropic vision have helped shape the institution into what it is today.

This transformative gift will not only benefit current and future students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine but also pave the way for groundbreaking research, compassionate care, and community transformation in healthcare.
