A special Pinocchio at the theater to promote inclusiveness

They call it “theatrical restitution”, not yet “show”. Because what will be staged on April 12th in via Cambiasi 10 in Milan will be a bit of a testing ground for the reception of the public, but above all for the sensations and well-being of the protagonists.

With the title “In a state of grace – Integrated Theater show on Pinocchio”, the Campo Teatrale Association of Milan, founded in 1999 as an acting school and then became the organizing engine of social and cultural events and workshops in collaboration with various institutions of the territory, since last November has been developing a project involving 8 children between 9 and 12 years old. Five of them are affected by a disability. Two are autistic, two with Down syndrome and a fifth with hyperkinetic disorder.

The small company, led by coordinators Lia Gallo and Laura Serena and directed by Francesca Merli, will perform on the stage of the Campo Teatrale in a story inspired by the famous Collodi fairy tale, where the little performers, Matilde, Arturo, Chiara, Raffaele, Tiago , Carlotta, Lorenzo and Sara, will have to deal with the lectures of dad Geppetto, the threat of the whale and the lack of love for school duties. In a crescendo of challenges and adventures that will lead them to face and overcome their fears.

The Milanese association Campo Teatrale has always set itself the goal of creating an inclusive world in which theater is placed at the service of the community. Its peculiarity lies precisely in the ability to use this medium to enrich people’s lives and address issues relevant to today’s society. The organization wants to be a qualified interlocutor in training aimed at the world of childhood and adolescence, with pedagogical intentions that aim at the well-being of the person through an empathic approach and playful modality.

Over the years he has collaborated with “Terres des Hommes” and the “Guarantor for the rights of children and adolescents” with whom he created the Rights jukebox (2019), DNA – 10 teenagers on stage against bullying (2022). And with the Municipality of Milan-social policies, thanks to which the project was completed between 2016 and 2018 Culture and sport for everyone (2016-18). Now this theatrical initiative, on which we have been working for 4 months and which in 2023 will see its real staging.

“The children we recruited for the show – explain the managers of the Theater Camp – were intercepted in various ways. Some through the schools, others at the” L’ability Onlus “Association. The others came to us through a ‘ reconnaissance of the contacts that we have developed in recent years thanks to the realization of socio-cultural events and workshops in the Milan area “.

A special adventure, with alternative contours and with the unknown of the final result, considering the great commitment of the operators to make the small actors interact in a balanced way with their peculiarities and singularities. “The memorization of the texts to be recited – they say – is the hardest obstacle. These children in fact need a lot of time to internalize the theatrical work. It is not only their individual disabilities that make their work more complicated, but also the character issues. such as shyness, fear of judgment, an atypical and complex creativity. At the same time, however, a very united group has been created, an environment where everyone feels free to express themselves, where the Theater truly becomes a game capable of creating worlds and unimaginable situations despite having precise rules “.

In parallel to the event, a crowdfunding campaign on “Produzioni dal Basso”, the first Italian crowdfunding and social innovation platform, is underway. The funds raised will support the work of the professionals involved in the project and will allow the creation of video contributions that will flow into the final staging.

This first stage of the “In a state of grace” project is also accompanied by an exhibition created by Soheil Raheli, a photographer who lives and works between Milan and Berlin. The photographic device will allow you to closely explore and investigate the different sensitivities and personalities of these little actors. The photographic (and video) reportage will serve to capture the differences intended as enrichment and progress in human interaction.
