A year of politics on Twitter: what party leaders have been talking about

by admin

In the last twelve months, the whole world has been talking about coronavirus, covid, pandemic. Italian politicians no, or at least not very much, judging by the hashtags they used on Twitter. KPI6 analysis reports first Nicola Zingaretti, with three different hashtags: #covid, # covid19, #uniticontroilcovid. But the former president of the PD was infected in the first person, and he told about his illness on social media, often replying also messages from supporters and other politicians.

After Zingaretti, they talked about #covid Antonio Tajani (22 hashtags) and Giorgia Meloni (15), with Di Maio last (5). On the other hand, the Foreign Minister used the hashtag #madeinitaly 17 times and #pattoexport 11 times, in line with his role. However, he is not a big user of the social network, with 529 tweets in a year; worse than him alone Emma Bonino (91 tweets), among which there are 5 #iovotono in the referendum last September on the cut of parliamentarians.

Psychological portraits
The data reveal a lot about the personality of the politicians examined: because what is a hashtag if not a way to start a discussion or take part in one that has already started? For example Matteo Renzi: he is no longer a big Twitter user (806 tweets in 12 months), but he used hashtags mainly to promote his book: #lamossadelcavallo in fact, it occurs 52 times. Predictably it will not go down in history as it happened for #JeSuisCharlie or #MakeAmericaGreatAgain, and #renzirep, #renzicorriere, #renzicorr, #renziqn, #renziavvenire, used in various interviews granted by the president of Italy, will also be overwhelmed in the flow of the social network. Viva. By the way, #italiaviva is used 34 times, against 51 recurrences of #enews, the section of Renzi’s website that publishes news and updates.

Forza Italia coordinator Tajani spent more hashtags on #vaccines (24) and #recoveryplan (20) than on his #forzaitalia party. As opposed to Giorgia Meloni, which is very committed to #fratelliditalia, and then devotes itself equally to #cassaintegration, #bastacoprifuoco, #bastasbarchi and #blocconavale. She is an assiduous tweeter, with 1691 tweets in the period considered by the research, but not like Carlo Calenda, who reaches 6211. The political leader of Action has also published a book, Monsters and how to defeat them, and he had an easy time making a hashtag out of it: #imostri, in fact, which has 103 occurrences. Immediately after, here is #calendasindaco, inevitably destined to become more used given his candidacy for mayor of Rome.

The Salvini case
At the top of the Twitter ranking, Lega leader Matteo Salvini, who detaches the others of different lengths with his 8251 tweets, the result of a studied and aggressive social strategy. Here too, no covid, no pandemic, no coronavirus. But 77 # mezzorainpiù (for the Lucia Annunziata TV show) and 143 #portaaporta, for the Bruno Vespa program. #Italian voices, used 206 times, garners a decent following on Twitter, and works the way a hashtag should work, engaging other people in the discussion. There is the #senato, with 219 recurrences, and then there is, of course, Salvini who talks about #salvini. With 1829 recurrences, it is the most used hashtag in the Italian political discussion.
