Abruzzo, of 4 Breast Units only two meet the requirements

by admin

IN ABRUZZO there are four Breast Units, but with some inconsistencies with respect to the requirements of these multidisciplinary breast cancer centers: two do not reach the minimum threshold of 135 new cases treated each year and there are deficiencies in the composition of the team and in quality assessment. This is highlighted by the results of a survey conducted by ALTEMS researchers for the “Breast Unit: the winning team” project, which Europa Donna Italia has launched to enhance the multidisciplinary nature of the breast care centers in Abruzzo, in collaboration with Senonetwork and thanks to the unconditional contribution of Roche.

The results were presented in the working group that took place on 28 October with doctors, associations and institutions. The survey involved the coordinators of the four regional Breast Units and the local associations active in the area of breast care. “Although the knowledge of the regional network of centers appears to be established, the centers unfortunately still collaborate sporadically”, underlines Eugenio di Brino, ALTEMS researcher at the Catholic University.

However, there is also the good news: on 3 September the new regional breast PDTA was approved, aimed “at speeding up the work to standardize patient care and therapy procedures, which are still very fragmented”, as he reminded ‘Councilor for health Nicoletta Verì, in her video message transmitted at the opening of the proceedings: “The complete activation of the four centers of the breast network – he said – must be operational within a reasonable time and will be subject to continuous monitoring”.

Puglia, what is still missing from the Breast Units

To solve the critical issues, Europa Donna Italia, together with its delegation from Abruzzo, is ready to give its contribution in support of the intervention plan already launched by the regional institutions. “We take note of the good will of the Abruzzo Region and the Councilor”, says Rosanna d’Antona, president of Europe Donna Italia: “Together with the associations of the Europa Donna Abruzzo delegation we are available to doctors and institutions to speed up the process, noting the quality perceived by patients and increasing communication and information to women. Voluntary associations, in fact, are a resource for the health system and can make an important contribution not only within the Breast Unit but also in the coordination and monitoring bodies of the network, as is already the case in other Regions ”.

“Our objectives are to foster clinical research and develop quality controls through masterclasses and training initiatives”, concludes Luigi Cataliotti, president of Senonetwork: “The Abruzzo units of Ortona and L’Aquila are already part of our network, and we are waiting for the remaining two can also reach the numbers necessary to become part of the group. With such a limited number of Centers, giving life to uniform projects throughout the region is not an impossible task, on the contrary, it is an objective to be achieved quickly “.
