Nine out of ten patients with advanced prostate cancer have bone metastases: injuries that can lead to the risk of fractures, severe pain, immobility and a reduction in the quantity and quality of life, as was reiterated today during the webinar “Health of bones in the cancer patient ”, organized by the Together Against Cancer Foundation and part of the national campaign of the same name carried out thanks to the unconditional support of Amgen. “In recent years, important results have been obtained in terms of reducing the mortality of prostate cancer. However, 30% of cases are discovered when the disease has already affected other organs, including bones “, underlines Francesco Cognetti, president of Together Against Cancer:” In prostate cancer, the presence of bone metastases reduces survival by 29% five years “.
Hormone therapies and the risk of fractures
Not only that: within two years of the onset of bone metastases, more than 4 out of ten patients have a fracture. Among the factors that increase the risk of fracture there are also some drugs: “Hormone therapy – which is estimated to be administered in up to 70% of patients – causes a rapid loss of bone mass”, says Cognetti: “Before starting any treatment pharmacological, every patient should be informed of the risk of induced bone loss ”. This loss of bone mass, however, can be countered both with lifestyle and with drug therapies. “Against bone metastases – continues the oncologist – we can resort to the administration of some particular osteoprotective drugs. To evaluate which treatments are feasible and effective, it is necessary to contact a specialized cancer center that can make an accurate evaluation of the patient. In our opinion, there is a need for more information among the sick and better preparation of specialists. The health of the bone is, in fact, a still little known aspect of prostate cancer and that instead deserves more attention from everyone “.
The campaign for bone health
To raise awareness of patients and doctors on this issue, the campaign promoted by Together against Cancer includes the distribution of information brochures, social media activities and webinars dedicated to patients. “We must reiterate to the sick the absolute need to adopt lifestyle changes to avoid bone loss”, concludes Cognetti: “Taking moderate exercise, for example, reduces the likelihood of fractures and the development of osteoporosis. It is absolutely necessary to stop smoking, as cigarettes damage not only the lungs but the whole body including the bones. It is also essential to reduce alcohol intake and follow a diet that is as varied and balanced as possible ”.
