Against headaches: the specialized center on headache – Health and Wellness – has opened in Borgo

TRENTO. The new Headache Center was presented in Borgo Valsugana, a project that sees the development, within the Trentino hospital network, of a third-level center of excellence dedicated to headache syndromes.

“The new Center, in addition to allowing better management of the pathology, with positive implications on the quality of life of patients, will be one of the first implementations of the integration between hospital and territory that will start with the new organization of APSS”, explained the director of the APSS, Antonio Ferro.

To the head of the clinic, the neurologist Matteo Fuccaro Simonetto, the task of illustrating the peculiarities of the new service dedicated to the treatment of drug resistant headaches where Trentino citizens will have access to innovative therapies and treatments that are significantly improving the lives of patients.

Ā«Neurological diseases – said Fuccaro Simonetto – represent about 10% of all diseases and among these, headache is one of the most frequent conditions, the symptoms of which are often reported by patients as a reason for medical consultation.

When the headache occurs repetitively, frequently and with high intensity, as occurs in the most frequent headache syndromes – migraine, tension headache, cluster headache, and drug overuse headachei – the consequences for the person suffering from it are considerable.

Overall, these headache syndromes represent the third cause of disability globally according to the World Health Organization and cause a severe reduction in the quality of life.

In the province of Trento the number of patients suffering from severe headache can be estimated at about 60,000 people, 15 thousand of which are affected by chronic headache and possible drug abuse: a large number of patients to whom the ongoing reorganization will be able to give answers with diagnostic therapeutic paths and dedicated services.

As specified by the director of the Neurology Unit of the Trento hospital, Bruno Giometto, on whom the Headache Center will depend, the management of headache patients will be divided into three levels of care “stratified according to the need for care and will provide, alongside the purely territorial management of patients with fewer care needs, the existence of specialized services for the management of complex patients”.

The center will be the main headquarters of the activity to which the two neurology clinics of Trento and Rovereto, already operational, will belong.

The management will be multidisciplinary, the diagnostic-therapeutic path (PDTA) is being prepared, providing for the involvement of various professionals.

“The creation of this new structure, dedicated to the care and study of patients suffering from drug resistant headaches, is fully part of the corporate reorganization project we are implementing: a new organizational model of hospital spread throughout the territory with specific centers of excellence, a reference center for the management of complex cases with the aim of improving therapeutic and care responses to patients suffering from these pathologies “, explained health councilor Stefania Segnana during the meeting.

In the province of Trento the number of patients suffering from severe headache can be estimated at about 60,000 people15,000 of which affected by chronic headache and possible drug abuse.
